ORTHO-PHTHALALDEHYDE

CAS NO:643-79-8
EC NO:211-402-2

Ortho-phthalaldehyde is a dialdehyde in which two formyl groups are attached to adjacent carbon centres on a benzene ring.
Ortho-phthalaldehyde has a role as an epitope.
Ortho-phthalaldehyde is a dialdehyde and a member of benzaldehydes.

A reagent that forms fluorescent conjugation products with primary amines.
Ortho-phthalaldehyde is used for the detection of many biogenic amines, peptides, and proteins in nanogram quantities in body fluids.

Ortho-phthalaldehyde (sometimes also o-phthalaldehyde or ortho-phthalaldehyde, OPA) is the chemical compound with the formula C6H4(CHO)2.
Ortho-phthalaldehyde is one of three isomers of benzene dicarbaldehyde, related to phthalic acid. This pale yellow solid is a building block in the synthesis of heterocyclic compounds and a reagent in the analysis of amino acids.
Ortho-phthalaldehyde dissolves in water solution at pH < 11.5.
Ortho-phthalaldehydes solutions degrade upon UV illumination and exposure to air.

Ortho-Phthalaldehyde is a convenient, ready-to-use, high-level disinfectant that provides a broad spectrum microbiological activity.
Ortho-Phthalaldehyde can disinfect a wide range of instruments used in dental clinics.
Ortho-Phthalaldehyde is ideal both for automated and manuel instrument reprocessing.
Ortho-Phthalaldehyde is designed for use in central processing, gastrointestinal departments, surgery centers and other areas where high-level disinfection is required.

Ortho-Phthalaldehyde is used as a fluorescent reagent for checking the assay of amines present in proteins, peptides by capillary electrophoresis and chromatography.
Ortho-Phthalaldehyde is also used for cholesterol assay in the picomole range as well as for fluorometric determination of histamine, histidine and other amino acids.
Ortho-Phthalaldehyde is obtained by the polymerization reaction which is used to make a photoresist. The nitrogen by o-phthaldialdehyde assay (NOPA) is a method used in winemaking process to measure the completion of fermentation.

Ortho-Phthalaldehyde is used in precolumn derivatization of amino acids for HPLC separation.
Ortho-Phthalaldehyde is also used for flow cytometric measurements of protein thiol groups.

Ortho-Phthalaldehyde is a compound that reacts with primary amines to produce a product that emits a highly fluorescent blue colour.
Ortho-Phthalaldehyde is used for the quick visualization of histamine, characterized by the appearance of a yellow stain.

Application:
Ortho-Phthalaldehyde has been used:
• in the preparation of O-phthaldialdehyde reagent for analysing gentamycin content
• in the preparation of reagent for determining the degree of hydrolysis of milk proteins
• in the measurement of free amino acids of milk samples by O-phthaldialdehyde/N-acetyl-L-cysteine (OPA/NAC) assay
• in the derivatization of putrescine samples

Ortho-Phthalaldehyde is mainly used as a high-level disinfectant (a low-temperature chemical method) for heat-sensitive medical and dental equipment such as endoscopes and thermometers; in recent years, it has gained popularity as a safe and better alternative to glutaraldehyde.

Uses
Precolumn derivatization reagent for primary amines and amino acids. The fluorescent derivative can be detected by reverse-phase HPLC. The reaction requires Ortho-Phthalaldehyde, primary amine and a sulfhydryl. In the presence of excess sulfhydryl, amines can be quantitated. In the presence of excess amine, sulfhydryls can be quantitated.

Uses
Disinfectant. Reagent in fluorometric determination of primary amines and thiols.

Uses
Ortho-Phthalaldehyde can be used for precolumn derivatization of amino acids for HPLC separation and for flow cytometric measurements of protein thiol groups.

Uses
Ortho-Phthalaldehyde can be widely used for precolumn derivatization of amino acids in HPLC separation or Capillary electrophoresis. For flow cytometric measurements of protein thiol groups.

Preparation
Ortho-Phthalaldehyde is a high-level chemical disinfectant that is commonly used for disinfection of dental and medical instruments as an alternative to glutaraldehyde, which is a known skin and respiratory sensitizer.
A variety of processes for manufacturing o-phthalaldehyde have been reported in the literature.
Ortho-Phthalaldehyde is produced by heating pure benzaldehyde and chloroform with potassium hydroxide solution. The resulting solution is further acidified with hydrochloric acid and cooled to yield a colorless powder of o-phthalaldehyde.
