TETRACOSAHEXAENOIC ACID

TETRACOSAHEXAENOIC ACID = NISINIC ACID

CAS Number: 81247-23-6 /  68378-49-4
Molecular Formula: C24H36O2

Any C24 straight-chain fatty acid containing six C=C double bonds.
Tetracosahexaenoic acid has role metabolite tetracosahexaenoic acid  is a long-chain fatty acid.
Tetracosahexaenoic acid is a polyunsaturated fatty acid tetracosahexaenoic acid is a straight-chain fatty acid.
Tetracosahexaenoic acid is conjugate acid of tetracosahexaenoate.
A molecular entity capable of donating a hydron to an acceptor (Bronsted base).
Any intermediate or product resulting from metabolism.

The term 'metabolite' subsumes the classes commonly known as primary and secondary metabolites.
Tetracosahexaenoic acid, also known as C24:6N-3 or C24:6omega-3, belongs to the class of organic compounds known as very long-chain fatty acids.
These are fatty acids with an aliphatic tail that contains at least 22 carbon atoms.
Tetracosahexaenoic acid belongs to the class of organic compounds known as very long-chain fatty acids.

Tetracosahexaenoic acid (C24:6n-3, THA, 3) is an essential biosynthetic precursor in mammals of docosahexaenoic acid (C22:6n-3, DHA, 1), the end-product of the metabolism of n-3 fatty acids.
Tetracosahexaenoic acid is present in commercially valuable fishes, such as flathead flounder.
Tricosahexaenoic acid (C23:6n-3, TrHA, 2), an odd-numbered-chain fatty acid, has been identified from marine organisms such as the dinoflagellate, Amphidinium carterae.
To date, few studies have examined Tetracosahexaenoic acid and TrHA 2 due to difficulties in detecting and identifying these compounds, so their chemical and biological properties remain poorly characterized.

Only one methodology for the chemical synthesis of Tetracosahexaenoic acid has been presented, and no method for the synthesis of TrHA 2 has been reported.
6,9,12,15,18,21-Tetracosahexaenoic acid (24∶6n−3) was isolated from a brittle star, Ophiura sarsi Lutken, at>95% purity to evaluate its physiological functions.
6(Z),9(Z),12(Z),15(Z),18(Z),21(Z)-Tetracosahexaenoic acid is a very long chain polyunsaturated fatty acid (VLCPUFA) that has been found in tunny, herring, cod-liver, pilot whale, sardine, and squalus-suclii-liver oils, bovine retina, and as a component of triglycerides and cholesterol esters in mouse and rat testis.

Naturally occurring very long chain fatty acids (fatty acids with more than 22 carbon atoms) include the main families: saturated, monounsaturated, methylene-interrupted and non methylene interrupted polyunsaturated fatty acids (VLCPUFA), and hydroxy acids.
There is a growing interest in one of these families, methylene-interrupted VLCPUFA, especially due to their involvement in the biosynthesis of docosahexaenoic acid in mammals.
Allegedly the best known representative of this family is Tetracosahexaenoic acid, 24:6n-3.

Elevated levels of these acids were found in mammalian reproductive organs and retina, but Tetracosahexaenoic acid is likely that virtually all mammalian cells contain these acids.
Dietary sources of Tetracosahexaenoic and related acids include marine fish and a number of Omega-3 food supplements.
Tetracosahexaenoic acid is a very long chain polyunsaturated omega-3 fatty acid, similar to docosahexaenoic acid (DHA).
The lipid name is 24:6 (n-3) and the chemical name is all-cis-6,9,12,15,18,21-tetracosahexaenoic acid.
Tetracosahexaenoic acid is not well studied, but polyunsaturated fatty acids even longer than DHA, nisinic acid included, may hold scientific promise.
