Trimellitic anhydride is an organic compound with the formula HO2CC6H3(C2O3).
Trimellitic anhydride is the cyclic anhydride of trimellitic acid.

Several thousand tons of this colorless solid are produced annually as a precursor to plasticizers for polyvinyl chloride.
Trimellitic anhydride is produced by air-oxidation of 1,2,4-trimethylbenzene.

Trimellitic anhydride is a 2-benzofuran compound having oxo groups at the 1- and 3-positions and a carboxy substituent at the 5-position; the cyclic anhydride formed from the carboxy groups at the 1- and 2-positions of trimellitic acid.
Trimellitic anhydride has a role as an epitope, an allergen and a hapten.

Trimellitic anhydride is a cyclic dicarboxylic anhydride, a dioxo monocarboxylic acid and a member of 2-benzofurans.
Trimellitic anhydride derives from a phthalic anhydride and a trimellitic acid.

Trimellitic anhydride and trimellitic acid (TMLA) are considered to be structural analogues.
In addition, in aqueous environments TMA is readily converted to TMLA.

Trimellitic anhydride rapidly forms TMLA under the conditions used to test its toxicity, the toxicities of Trimellitic anhydride and TMLA are qualitatively believed to be the similar for systemic toxicity with these two chemicals being presented as analogues.
The only difference being sensitization and potentially local effects/reactions at the initial point of contact (skin, eye, and respiratory irritation).

Trimellitic anhydride may be directly attributed to the formation of haptens following a reaction with proteins.
Trimellitic anhydride does not react with proteins to form haptens, and therefore does not share this mode of action for sensitization.

Trimellitic anhydride has a melting point of 165ºC, a boiling point of 390ºC, a vapor pressure of 7.6 x 10-5 Pa @ 25ºC, and assuming no hydrolysis a log Kow of 1.95 and a water solubility of 1,036 mg/L.
Trimellitic anhydride has a melting point of 219ºC, an unknown boiling point, a vapor pressure of 3.8 x 10-6 Pa @ 25ºC, a log Kow of 0.95 and a water solubility of 21,000 mg/L.

The half-life of Trimellitic anhydride and TMLA in air is estimated to be 13.4 and 6.6 days, respectively, due to direct reactions with photochemically generated hydroxyl radicals.
In the presence of water, Trimellitic anhydride rapidly hydrolyzes (within 10 minutes) to form TMLA.

Trimellitic anhydrides are likely to partition to the water compartments in the environment.
Acute toxicity testing in fish, invertebrates, and algae indicate a very low order of toxicity with measured No-Observed-Effect-Concentrations (NOECs) of 896, 792 and 739 mg/L, respectively.

Trimellitic anhydrides are readily biodegraded under aerobic conditions in sewage sludge, and are expected to biodegrade in soil and water as well.
Trimellitic anhydrides are not expected to bioaccumulate in food webs based on a BCF of 3.2.

Trimellitic anhydride is a trifunctional, highly reactive aromatic anhydride.
The white, free-flowing flakes are available in a variety of packaging sizes.

Vinyl plasticizers based on Trimellitic anhydride offer a blend of benefits unmatched by polymeric or phthalate plasticizers.
The low volatility of trimellitates makes them ideal for high temperature applications such as electrical wire & cable insulation, automobile interiors (retention of softness and elimination of window fogging), appliance gaskets, and flat-roof membranes

Trimellitates are highly permanent plasticizers for PVC medical products, combining very low volatility with good extraction resistance and are used in applications like haemodialysis tubing, neonatal care and blood platelet storage.
Withstanding high humidity environments and repeated washings with soapy water make trimellitates an excellent choice for vinyl shower curtains, vinyl upholstery and other sheet applications where permanence is desired.

Trimellitates do not mar “lacquer” surfaces and other polymers and are used for vinyl products that contact finished surfaces like refrigerator gaskets, binders, and portfolios.
Trimellitic anhydride is used in high solids, waterborne, powder, coil, and radiation cure compliant coatings in demanding applications for appliances, automotive OEM and refinishing, can coatings, coil coatings, industrial maintenance, metal furniture, wood furniture and kitchen cabinets, machinery and equipment, and architectural trim and exteriors.

Trimellitic anhydride is used to make ester-imide and amide-imide high performance, high temperature wire enamels and magnet wire coatings for copper and aluminum wire used to make tight coils in transformers, inductors, motors and generators used in critical applications.
Trimellitic anhydride is an essential component is high performance polyamide-imide fibers, high performance lubricants, epoxy curatives, dye intermediates, dental adhesives, and enteric coatings.

Trimellitic anhydride is primarily a reactive chemical compound that has chief usage in the synthesis of trimellitate esters.
Trimellitic anhydride is widely utilized as an intermediate for synthesizing surface coatings, dyes, chemicals, adhesives, pharmaceuticals, polymers, printing inks, and agrochemicals.

Rising application in vinyl flooring along with the manufacturing of heat-proof varnishes, paints, and wire enamels will favor the market expansion.
Trimellitic anhydride is used in polyester resins for coatings, polyamide resins (Nylon), wire enamel, plasticiser (TOTM), Trimellitic copolymer for cosmetics, reagent in chemical synthesis, printing inks, coatings, adhesives, foils and similar applications, as a binder for glass fibers, sand, and other aggregates, plasticizers/PVC, as a reactant in wire and cable insulation enamels and polyester resins in powder coatings, epoxy curing agent, textile sizing agent, rubber curing accelerator, electrostatic toner binder, vinyl cross-link agent.

Trimellitic anhydride is a petrochemical intermediate manufactured in solid form.
Trimellitic anhydride mainly used in the esterification of alcohols, in the production of resins for electrode-position and powder coatings, a binder for glass fibers and other aggregates, an embossng agent for vinyl flooring, a curing agent for epoxy resins, and also as an intermediate for the synthesis of surface coatings chemicals, adhesives, polymers, dyes, printing inks, pharmaceuticals, and agrochemicals.

Trimellitic anhydride is mainly applied to produce good heat-proof, weather-proof and solvent-proof trimellitate plasticizers, among which the most popular product is tri(2-ethylhexyl)trimellitate.
Trimellitic anhydride is also used to synthesize polyester resins.TMA can also be applied to curing agent of epoxy resins.

Trimellitic Anhydride is mainly used as raw material for polyester resin, polyimide resin, plasticizer TOTM , and also be used for producing heatproof & insulating, adhesive, surfactant, paint, synthesize dye materials etc.
Trimellitic anhydride is used as an embossing agent for vinyl flooring and as a curing agent for epoxy resins.
Trimellitic anhydride is also used as an intermediate for the synthesis of surface coatings chemicals, adhesives, polymers, dyes printing inks, pharmaceuticals.

USES:

Trimellitic anhydrides uses in plasticizers is poised to expand with increasing involvement as an important curing agent in the manufacturing of epoxy resins.
The growing usage of a large amount of the product in synthesis of plasticizers that are incorporated in PVC (polyvinyl chloride) to cater to growing utility in various end-user industries will add a positive edge to the market expansion in the coming years.

Trimellitic Anhydride is used in the production of resins, powder coatings, and as a binder for glass fibers, and other aggregates.

Trimellitic anhydride is used mainly in the synthesis of trimellitate esters.
These esters are used as plasticisers for polyvinyl chloride, especially when temperature stability is required.

Trimellitic anhydride is less volatile and less water-soluble than corresponding phthalates.
