ZINC PHOSPHATE

CAS NO:7779-90-0
EC NO:231-944-3

Zinc phosphate is an inorganic compound with the formula Zn3(PO4)2)(H2O)4. This white powder is widely used as a corrosion resistant coating on metal surfaces either as part of an electroplating process or applied as a primer pigment (see also red lead).
Zinc phosphate has largely displaced toxic materials based on lead or chromium, and by 2006 it had become the most commonly used corrosion inhibitor.
Zinc phosphate coats better on a crystalline structure than bare metal, so a seeding agent is often used as a pre-treatment. One common agent is sodium pyrophosphate.

Minerals
Natural forms of zinc phosphate include minerals hopeite and parahopeite. A somewhat similar mineral is natural hydrous zinc phosphate called tarbuttite, Zn2(PO4)(OH). Both are known from oxidation zones of Zn ore beds and were formed through oxidation of sphalerite by the presence of phosphate-rich solutions. The anhydrous form has not yet been found naturally.

Dentistry
Zinc phosphate dental cement is one of the oldest and widely used dental cements.
Zinc phosphate is commonly used for luting permanent metal and zirconium dioxide restorations and as a base for dental restorations.
Zinc phosphate cement is used for cementation of inlays, crowns, bridges, and orthodontic appliances and occasionally as a temporary restoration.

Zinc phosphate is prepared by mixing zinc oxide and magnesium oxide powders with a liquid consisting principally of phosphoric acid, water, and buffers.
Zinc phosphate is the standard cement to measure against.
Zinc phosphate has the longest track record of use in dentistry.
Zinc phosphate is still commonly used; however, resin-modified glass ionomer cements are more convenient and stronger when used in a dental setting.

Zinc phosphate coating is a crystallized conversion coating formed on the metal surface. The phosphate coating process is based on the chemical reaction between the metal and the weak acidic phosphate fluid to form insoluble phosphate crystals on the surface of the part.

Phosphate coating is used as a pretreatment before painting, to increase corrosion resistance and to provide a better adhesion surface for coating systems.

When used alone or with oil, the phosphate reduces the friction characteristics of the moving components or threaded parts. Although phosphate is generally referred to as a coating, since phosphate alone has a low rust resistance, it must be used in combination with oil or top lacquer applications in order to be used as a protection against corrosion.
Zinc phosphate can be applied to Ferrous metals, but it has no effect on Stainless Steel.

Advantages:
Provides corrosion resistance
Provides a good adhesion surface for Paint and Organic coatings
Reduction of friction coefficient when applied with oil

Zinc Phosphate is the type of phosphating which is suitable for metal parts which are required to provide high corrosion resistance.
Zinc Phosphate is the crystallized conversion coating.
Zinc Phosphate can be applied as fine grained and coarse grained and is the type of coating commonly used for equipment used in bad outdoor conditions before powder coating and electro-coating.

Zinc phosphate cements or polycarboxylate cements are still used for cementation of posts and crowns. They are generally supplied as a powder and a liquid and their physical properties are highly influenced by the mixing ratio of the components.

Zinc phosphate conversion coating gives a high level of corrosion resistance and provides a perfect foundation for subsequent coating or painting.
Zinc phosphate conversion coatings can be used on a wide range of metallic surfaces including galvanized steel, electrogalvanized steel, zinc-alloy-coated steel aluminium, zinc, cadmium, silver and tin.

-Application for preventing abrasion caused by friction before metal forming processes such as cold drawing, cold forging, deep drawing,
- Application for increasing paint adhesion before electrostatic powder coating and wet painting,
- Application for increasing wear resistance and corrosion resistance with protective lubrication.

Zinc phosphates are applied on steel surfaces using solutions of zinc phosphate, phosphoric acid and activators. These proprietary chemical solutions deposit a crystalline coating of zinc phosphate during the application process. During the initial steps in the process, the metal is cleaned to remove oily soils. They can be applied cold or hot. Although viable, the cold processes are not widely used.

Zinc phosphate conversion coatings are widely used for increasing corrosion resistance and surface preparation for painting. This kind of treatment has recently been introduced in the field of reinforced concrete. However, the disadvantage in the use of such coatings is the existence of pores.
Zinc phosphating baths have constantly been developed and modified by additives in order to enhance the coating characteristics including the corrosion resistance and the alkaline stability.

Zinc phosphate cement the one of the oldest and widely used cements, and is commonly used for luting permanent metal restorations and as a base.
Zinc phosphate is a high-strength cement base, mixed from zinc oxide powder and phosphoric acid liquid.
Due to its low initial pH, it may cause pulpal irritation, especially where only a thin layer of dentin exists between the cement and the pulp; thus is especially important to follow the correct procedures and precautions when using zinc phosphate cement.

Zinc phosphate coating is commonly used for corrosion protection of metallic materials, mainly mild steel.

Zinc phosphate coating elevates the natural crystalline aesthetics of hot dipped galvanized steel for decorative use.
Zinc phosphate is favoured for its natural, luxurious and stately ambiance and for the gray tones that settle over time.

Main Features
-External use possible
-Creates a natural tone that cannot be replicated with paint coat finishes
-Blends into surrounding atmosphere over time

The application of zinc phosphate coating results in a layer of insoluble, crystalline phosphates (1~20μ). The resulting porous layer is composed of hopeite, phosphophyllite and other zinc phosphate compounds that combine with the hot-dip galvanization coat through the following process.

1. The galvanized metal reacts with the solution, causing zinc from the material to elute into the solution.
2. Zinc reacts with the solution to form zinc phosphate compound.
3. The zinc phosphate compounds precipitate on the surface.

Zinc phosphate coating is roughly twice as corrosion resistant to hot-dipped galvanization, although the performance depends on the coating thickness.
As zinc phosphate coating is colourless, its gray tones are a result of reflections. This means that the coat is not affected by ultraviolet rays; absolving it from any concerns of weather resistance.

Zinc Phosphate is a moderately water and acid soluble Zinc source for uses compatible with Phosphates.
Zinc Phosphate is generally immediately available in most volumes.

Zinc Phosphate is a micronized white anti-corrosive pigment suitable for a wide range of different primer applications.

Zinc Phosphate is used to enhance paint adhesion and reduce corrosion

Zinc phosphate enhances paint adhesion by giving the paint something to bond to securely.
Zinc phosphate reduces paint-to-metal reactions and forms a barrier between the substrate and the paint.
Zinc phosphate also reduces general surface corrosion on metal substrates and reduces underfilm delamination in the event of damage to the paint film.

Zinc phosphate coatings typically serve as a base on steel for dry film lubricants, fluoroplymer coatings,  metal flake coatings, or lubricating oils. They may also be used for dry lubrication to improve break-in or reduce galling.
Zinc phosphate coatings only  provide minimal corrosion protection without additional treatment. Their crystalline structure enables dry films and other coatings to mechanically bond to the steel, greatly enhancing adhesion.
Zinc phosphate coatings are typically gray in color. For defense applications, this finish can reduce reflectivity of base materials.

Properties
Chemical
Zinc phosphate reacts with strong acids to release phosphoric acid.

Physical
Zinc phosphate is an odorless white crystalline solid, practically insoluble in water (0.03 g/l), which melts at 900 °C.

Preparation

Chemical Properties        White powder.Soluble in acids and ammonium hydroxide; insoluble in water.

Uses
Dental cements; phosphors; conversion coating of steel, aluminum, and other metal surfaces.

Uses
Zinc phosphate (ZP), barium metaborate, and strontium chromate pigments are also common ingredients in corrosion-inhibiting coatings. Thin wash-inhibiting primers are often formulated with chromate or phosphate pigments that are introduced in a synthetic polymeric binder such as a vinyl chloride copolymer. The variety of inorganic corrosion-inhibiting pigments includes also lead carbonate, strontium chromate, zinc oxide, and Zinc phosphate.

Zinc phosphate (ZP) is the most commercially successful non-toxic inhibitive pigment used in paint formulations. Furthermore, the use of phosphates does not represent an excessive cost, and their application is even easier than other proposed alternatives for chromate pigments. This is the anticorrosive pigment most frequently used in paints. The massive use of nontoxic and environmentally acceptable Zinc phosphates developed an immense pressure for regulations that prohibited the use of red lead and chromated anticorrosion pigments. Experimental results suggest that Zinc phosphate and all phosphate-based pigments (zinc-aluminum polyphosphate, Zinc phosphate modified with organic corrosion inhibitor, etc.) exhibit improved anticorrosion efficiency when their concentration is increased.
