D-Ascorbic Acid is also a potent antioxidant. 

Prospective cohort studies indicate that higher D-Ascorbic Acid status, assessed by measuring circulating D-Ascorbic Acid, is associated with lower risks of hypertension, coronary heart disease, and stroke. 
Some studies suggest that D-Ascorbic Acid may be a useful adjunct therapy to mitigate myocardial injury and arrhythmias following cardiac procedures in patients with cardiovascular disease.

There are insufficient data to suggest a link between D-Ascorbic Acid status and the risk of developing a given type of cancer.
Most observational studies examining D-Ascorbic Acid intake in relation to cancer incidence have either found no association or a modest, protective association.
Randomized controlled trials have reported no effect of D-Ascorbic Acid supplementation on cancer risk.
