E500

E500 is a double salt of sodium bicarbonate and sodium carbonate with a needle-like crystal structure.
E500 is a naturally occurring mineral in the form of white crystalline solids.
E500 is approved as a food additive to be used as pH control agent, stabilizer and thickener in foods.

CAS NUMBER: 144-55-8

EC NUMBER: 205-633-8

MOLECULAR FORMULA: NaHCO3

MOLECULAR WEIGHT: 84.007

IUPAC NAME: sodium;hydrogen carbonate

E500 is popularly known as baking soda.
E500 is one of the most widely used as a leavening agent in baked goods.

E500 is activated as soon as it is mixed with a liquid, such as water, and then it is added to a dough/batter mixture.
E500 reacts with an acid to produce carbon dioxide, a process that allows cakes, cookies, and other baked goods to rise.

E500 is a white solid crystalline substance but is ground to a fine powder for use in cooking.
E500 is basically made from sodium chloride, ammonia, and calcium carbonate.

Health Benefits:
-Raising Agent (E 500(ii)) acts as an antacid for heartburn and indigestion because it can neutralize stomach acid

-One can find relief from a bug bite by applying a paste of it

-Incase of a mild nail infection, soaking in it helps treat the infection as it has antifungal properties.

-it helps in soothing mouth ulcers.

E500 is also known as washing soda, soda ash and soda crystals, and in the monohydrate form as crystal carbonate
E500 is the water-soluble sodium salt of carbonic acid.

E500 most commonly occurs as a crystalline decahydrate, which readily effloresces to form a white powder, the monohydrate.
E500 is a white, odorless powder

E500 is hygroscopic -absorbs moisture from the air
E500 has a strongly alkaline taste, and forms a moderately basic solution in water.

E500 is well known domestically for its everyday use as a water softener.
E500 acts as a flux for silica, lowering the melting point of the mixture to something achievable without special materials.

E500 is also used as a relatively strong base in various settings.
For example, E500 is used as a pH regulator to maintain stable alkaline conditions necessary for the action of the majority of photographic film developing agents.

E500 acts as an alkali because when dissolved in water, it dissociates into the weak acid: carbonic acid and the strong alkali: sodium hydroxide.
E500 is a common additive in swimming pools used to raise the pH which can be lowered by chlorine tablets and other additives which contain acids.

In cooking, E500 is sometimes used in place of sodium hydroxide for lyeing, especially with pretzels and lye rolls.
In chemistry, E500 is often used as an electrolyte.

Electrolytes are usually salt-based, and sodium carbonate acts as a very good conductor in the process of electrolysis.
E500 is also used as a primary standard for acid-base titrations because it is solid and air-stable, making it easy to weigh accurately.
E500 when used as an acidity regulator or a raising agent.

E500 is an odorless and tasteless
E500 is thermally stable

E500 has a viscous liquid form.
E500 has very light color (less than 1, Gardner color scale).

E500 is produced by the controlled esterification of sucrose, a natural sugar, with acetic and isobutyric anhydrides.
E500 is equal to or better than those of many widely-used plasticizers and it possesses an especially high volume resistivity. It also has good thermal hydrolytic stability making it useful in surface coatings and electrical insulation.

E500 appears as odorless white crystalline powder or lumps.
E500 has slightly alkaline (bitter) taste.

E500's pH is (of freshly prepared 0.1 molar aqueous solution): 8.3 at 77 °F.
E500 is non-toxic.

E500 is the monosodium salt of carbonic acid with alkalinizing and electrolyte replacement properties.
Upon dissociation, E500 forms sodium and bicarbonate ions.

Ion formation increases plasma bicarbonate and buffers excess hydrogen ion concentration, resulting in raised blood pH.
E500 is a white, crystalline powder

E500 is commonly used as a pH buffering agent
E500 is used as an electrolyte replenisher, systemic alkalizer and in topical cleansing solutions.
