EC / List no.: 618-565-2
CAS no.: 9049-76-7
Mol. formula: C31H56O22

Hydroxypropyl starch is a type of modified starch used as a food additive.
I has the E number E1440.
Hydroxyl propyl starch is not absorbed intact by the gut, but are significantly hydrolyzed by intestinal enzymes and then fermented by intestinal microbiota.

Hydroxypropyl starch is a modified starch with E-number 1440.
The modification consists of treating the starch with a hydroxyl group (OH).

hydroxypropyl starch as a surface treatment agent in some vegetable capsules.
The treatment makes the capsule more resistant to thermal degradation and bacterial attack.

The hydroxypropyl starch used in Q10 Green is extracted from fermented GMO-free corn, potatoes and peas.

The hydroxypropyl starch used in Omega 7 SBA24 is extracted from fermented GMO-free corn.

Hydroxypropyl starch is digested in the gastrointestinal tract just like ordinary starch and fermented by intestinal bacteria.

Hydroxypropyl starch may be used without quantitative restriction in all foods that may generally contain additives.

Chemical Properties
White or slightly yellowish powder.

Uses:
Hydroxypropyl starch is a type of modified starch used as a food additive.
Hydroxyl propyl starch is hydrolyzed by intestinal enzymes and then fermented by intestinal microbiota.
Hydroxypropyl Starch is a milk substitute comprising starch and protein

Hydroxypropyl starch is a derivative of natural starch, used primarily for fluid-loss control in drilling muds, drill-in, completion and workover fluids.
Being nonionic, it is only slightly affected by salinity and hardness in fluids.
Linear and branched carbohydrate polymers in natural starch have three reactive OH groups on each glucose unit.
During manufacture, these polymers are reacted with propylene oxide, adding hydroxypropyl (CH(OH)CH2CH3) groups at the OH positions by an ether linkage.
By adding the hydroxypropyl groups, the HP starch becomes more resistant to thermal degradation and bacterial attack.

Hydroxypropyl starch is a Starch etherified with propylene oxide, rendering it more resist. to thermal degradation and bacterial attack Hydroxypropyl starch uses and applications include:
Emulsifier, thickener, binder, stabilizer in foods, fluid loss control agent in drilling muds, completion and workover fluids, adhesives

Usage
1) In the hydroxypropyl starch food industry, hydroxypropyl starch can be used as a thickener, hydroxypropyl starch can be used as a suspending agent, and hydroxypropyl starch can be used as a binder.
2) Hydroxypropyl starch papermaking industry: Hydroxypropyl starch is used for internal sizing of paper, hydroxypropyl starch is used for surface sizing, hydroxypropyl starch makes printing ink bright, hydroxypropyl starch makes uniform, hydroxypropyl starch Makes the film smooth, hydroxypropyl starch reduces ink consumption, and hydroxypropyl starch has a certain ability to pull hair.
3) Hydroxypropyl starch textile industry: Hydroxypropyl starch can be used as warp sizing agent, hydroxypropyl starch improves the abrasion resistance during weaving, hydroxypropyl starch and weaving efficiency, hydroxypropyl starch with high degree of substitution Base starch can be used as printing paste.
4) Hydroxypropyl starch pharmaceutical industry: hydroxypropyl starch can be used as a disintegrant for tablets

Production Methods
The starch is chemically denatured by mild degradation reactions or by the reaction between the hydroxyl groups of natural starch and the selected chemicals.
One or several of the following methods can be used: mild oxidation (bleaching), moderate oxidation, acid depolymerization, monofunctional esterification reaction, multifunctional esterification reaction (crosslinking reaction), monofunctional etherification reaction, Multifunctional etherification reaction (crosslinking reaction), alkaline gelatinization and a combination of these methods in a certain way (see each monomer).
These manufacturing methods can be used as the basis for denaturation classification.

Description
White or slightly yellowish powder.

COSING REF No: 56833
Chem/IUPAC Name:    Hydroxypropyl Starch is a propylene glycol ether of starch

Its functions (INCI)
Viscosity controlling : Increases or decreases the viscosity of cosmetics

Hydroxypropyl Starch (E1440) increases formulation stability in alkaline conditions, providing better colour, shine and texture.
In fluid or semi-solid systems, this product exhibits oil-like properties, imparting superior sheen, clarity and a bland taste.
Hydroxypropyl Starch offers exceptional stability to gelling upon refrigeration compared to traditional, pre-gelatinised starches. In a low moisture system, it contributes to crunchiness.

Functions:
1. Emulsifier - Allows water and oils to remain mixed together to form an emulsion.
2. Gelling Agent / Thickener - Increases the viscosity by thickening the liquid to give it more texture
2-Hydroxypropyl starch is prepared by treating starch with propyleneoxide.
The resulting starch is more stable against acid, alkaline and starch degrading enzymes.
Hydroxypropyl Starch also provides better color and shine to products.
Hydroxypropyl Starch is gluten free and can be used as a stabilizer, thickener, binder, emulsifier during food, cosmetic and oilfield drilling processing.
Hydroxypropyl Starch has E number E1440.
Hydroxypropyl Starch is approved to use as food additive in EU and generally recognized as safe food substance in US.

Description:
Hydroxypropyl Starch is prepared by treating starch with propylene oxide.
The resulting starch is more stable against acid, alkaline and starch degrading enzymes.
Hydroxypropyl Starch also provides better colour and shine to products.

They are prepared by physically, enzymatically, or chemically treating native starch, thereby changing the properties of the starch.

Modified starches are used in practically all starch applications, such as in food products as a thickening agent, stabilizer or emulsifier, in pharmaceuticals as a disintegrant; as binder in coated paper.

Uses:
Hydroxypropyl Starch is used as a thickener, vegetable gum which may be bleached with propylene oxide(one of a choice), which is dangerous to asthmatics.
Used in baby food, jelly type sweets, wine gums, iced lollies, confectionary, yogurts, egg white mix, fruit flavoured fillings, batter mixes - wide range of foods.
Hydroxypropyl Starch is used to thicken many types of food, such as salad dressings.

Although they have no major known adverse effects, but because some starches, ie corn can be genetically modified, this raises some cause for concern.
