KELTAN 6950C

Keltan 6950C is a high-performance EPDM rubber grade based on ethylene-propylene-diene monomer produced by ARLANXEO. The product is particularly valued in rubber applications requiring rapid vulcanization, good low-temperature flexibility, and strong mechanical performance, thanks to the coexistence of low ethylene content, high ENB level, and high Mooney viscosity.
The basic structure of Keltan 6950C is an unsaturated side-group EPDM copolymer containing ethylene, propylene, and ENB, ethylidene norbornene, as the third monomer. The fact that the polymer main chain is largely saturated provides resistance to ozone, weathering, oxidation, and heat aging, while the ENB units enable crosslinking with sulfur or suitable peroxide systems.
Keltan 6950C is a high Mooney ethylene propylene-diene rubber based on ethylene and ethylene norbornene chemistry. Keltan 6950C combines a high ENB level with a relatively low ethylene content and a controlled molecular architecture designed for demanding rubber processing applications.
Keltan 6950C is particularly well-suited for automotive sponge profiles, dense sealing profiles, windshield wiper compounds, and other EPDM applications requiring rapid curing, low-temperature flexibility, and strong weather resistance.
Keltan 6950C has an ethylene content of approximately 44%. This value is lower than many higher ethylene EPDM grades and contributes to the maintenance of amorphous character with low temperature flexibility by reducing the regular crystallization tendency of polymer chains.
The ENB content of Keltan 6950C is approximately 9.0%. This relatively high level of diene can aid in rapid cross-link development, especially in sulfur-cured compounds, by providing more reactive sites that can be used during vulcanization.
The Mooney viscosity of Keltan 6950C is approximately 65 MU, and the ML(1+4) is 125 °C. This value indicates that the product has a high molecular weight and high raw rubber viscosity; accordingly, compound strength, extrusion shape stability and mechanical properties can be supported.
The molecular weight distribution of Keltan 6950C specified by the manufacturer is Controlled Long Chain Branching, or CLCB. This molecular architecture was developed to combine the mechanical advantages of high molecular weight with more controlled machinability.
Keltan 6950C is particularly suitable for applications such as automotive sponge profiles, dense extrusion profiles, and wiper blades. Its low ethylene content supports low-temperature flexibility, while its high ENB content can ensure rapid curing and production efficiency.

Keltan 6950C is a polymeric material and therefore does not have a single separate molecular formula or a fixed molecular paper.
Keltan 6950C contains polymer chains with a molecular weight distribution, and its composition is more expressively defined through ethylene content, diene content, and rheological properties.
Therefore, Mooney viscosity, ENB level, ethylene content, and molecular architecture are more useful purchasing parameters than nominal polymer molecular weight.
Keltan 6950C belongs to the EPDM family of synthetic elastomers. The polymer backbone consists mainly of saturated ethylene and propylene sequences, while a controlled amount of ethylene norbornene provides saturation outside the main polymer backbone.
The Keltan 6950C construction provides the material with the climate resistance of EPDM while maintaining zones that allow for efficient sulfur vulcanization.
Keltan 6950C's relatively low ethylene content, which is approximately 44% weight, is a key feature of Keltan 6950C. The lower ethylene content generally reduces the tendency to high crystalline ethylene-rich areas and promotes more amorphous rubber construction.
Keltan 6950C provides good low-temperature flexibility, making this grade particularly attractive for dynamic sealing and profile applications.
Keltan 6950C content is relatively high for commercial EPDM quality at approximately 9.0% wt.%.
The higher ENB content allows for greater curing point concentration when the appropriate accelerator system is used and promotes rapid sulfur vulcanization. This high curing response is one of the decisive reasons why Keltan 6950C is chosen for high-efficiency extrusion and continuous vulcanization processes.
The Keltan 6950C also uses a controlled molecular weight architecture, defined as CLCB in the grade specification.
The Keltan 6950C molecular architecture ensures a balance between compound processability, melt strength, and finished rubber properties. The combination of high Mooney viscosity and controlled branching is particularly beneficial when an uncured compound needs to maintain its dimensional stability after extrusion.

WHAT IS KELTAN 6950C?

Keltan 6950C is an EPDM grade synthetic rubber containing ethylene, propylene and ENB. It is commercially positioned within ARLANXEO's Keltan product family as a specialty grade with high Mooney viscosity, high ENB level and low ethylene content.
The name EPDM comes from the phrase Ethylene Propylene Diene Monomer. The main chain of the polymer consists of ethylene and propylene units, while the third monomer provides a controlled amount of unsaturation.
The third monomer used in Keltan 6950C is ENB, i.e., ethylidene norbornene. Since the double bond of ENB remains outside the polymer main chain, the reactive center is provided for vulcanization, while most of the main chain remains saturated.
This structural feature is one of the main reasons why EPDM has higher resistance to ozone and weather conditions than elastomers such as natural rubber, SBR or NBR, which have more unsaturation in their main chain.
Keltan 6950C contains approximately 44% ethylene. The low ethylene content helps to keep the polymer more amorphous and can reduce its tendency to harden at low temperature. ARLANXEO states that this low ethylene level provides a significant advantage in terms of the low temperature properties of the product.
Keltan 6950C contains approximately 9% ENB. This diene level, which can be considered high within the EPDM grade, can be especially advantageous for rapid sulfur vulcanization.
Keltan 6950C must maintain the geometry formed in the extrusion die as an uncured profile moves towards the vulcanizing section.
A polymer with insufficient melt strength may sag, collapse, or lose dimensional accuracy before crosslinking begins. The 44% ethylene level distinguishes Keltan 6950C from the related Keltan 6950 regional grade, which contains about 48% ethylene. Both grades have a weight of about 9.0% ENB and a nominal Mooney viscosity of about 65 MU.
The low ethylene content, which is 6950C, shifts the balance to more amorphous character and low-temperature flexibility.
Keltan 6950C is not specified as an oil-extended grade.
This gives compounding manufacturers direct control over the type and level of process oil used during mixing. Therefore, the choice of oil can be matched to hardness, extrusion behavior, low-temperature properties, and other requirements of the final rubber compound. This distinction is important when comparing Keltan 6950C to grades like Keltan 6951C.
The polymer composition of Keltan 6951C is closely related but contains about 15 phr oil.

Therefore, direct exchange between oil and a non-fat expanding grade alters the compound formulation and should not be done on a one-to-one weight basis.
Keltan 6950C low polymer density characterizes EPDM and may contribute to relatively lightweight rubber products compared to denser specialty elastomers.
The finished compound density is significantly affected by carbon black, mineral fillers, oils, and other additives. Keltan 6950C can be combined with carbon black to achieve strengthening, ultraviolet protection, and controlled mechanical properties.
Carbon-black type and loading affect tensile strength, modulus, hardness, extrusion behavior, and electrical properties. Highly reinforced compounds require a different filling method than soft sponge or low-hardness sealing formulations.
Keltan 6950C, clay, silica, and other inorganic materials can be incorporated to alter cost, hardness, surface properties, and process behavior. The choice of filler should consider compatibility, moisture content, and the impact on the chosen curing system.
Keltan 6950C paraffinic process oils are widely compatible with EPDM. The oil reduces compound viscosity, improves softness and facilitates the incorporation of high filler levels.
Oil type and dosage must be optimized because excessive plasticization can reduce mechanical strength or compression resistance.
Keltan 6950C can be vulcanized using sulfur-based curing systems.
The concentration of Keltan 6950C provides fertile sites for sulfur crosslinking and promotes a relatively fast curing response.
The type of accelerator and sulfur level determine burn safety, cure rate, and final cross-linking structure.
The choice between Keltan 6950C, sulfur and peroxide should be based on processor conditions and final service requirements.
Keltan 6950C coagents can be used in peroxide-cured EPDM compounds.
These multi-functional components can improve cross-connection efficiency and improve module or compression characteristics.
Its effects on elongation, stiffness, and process safety should be evaluated in the full compound.
Foamed or sponge Keltan 6950C is a particularly important area for Keltan 6950C. The polymer must develop enough green strength to maintain the cellular structure and cure fast enough to stabilize the foam during continuous production. The high ENB content and rheological properties make this grade particularly suitable for automotive sponge profile formulations.
Keltan 6950C blowing agents can be used to build the cellular structure.
The Keltan 6950C separation profile of the blowing system must be coordinated with the vulcanization rate so that gas evolution and web formation occur in the correct order.
If blowing occurs too early or curing occurs too quickly, the cell structure and final density may become inconsistent.

CHEMICAL STRUCTURE AND MOLECULAR PROPERTIES OF KELTAN 6950C

Keltan 6950C has a terpolymer structure consisting of ethylene, propylene and ENB monomers. Ethylene units give the polymer chain -CH₂-CH₂- segments. Propylene units, on the other hand, form methyl side groups in the chain, limiting regular crystallization. The ethylene/propylene ratio has a significant effect on the amorphous or partially crystalline behavior of EPDM.
Keltan 6950C also performs well in contact with hot water and steam compared to many hydrocarbon rubbers. Keltan 6950C behavior extends the broader EPDM family to hoses, seals, gaskets, and industrial components exposed to aqueous environments.
The suitability of Keltan 6950C for a specific fluid service application must be approved as the whole compound, not assumed from the polymer family alone.
Keltan 6950C exhibits limited resistance to petroleum oils and hydrocarbon fuels. Keltan 6950C swells in many mineral oils, gasoline, and hydrocarbon solvents due to its non-polar saturated structure.
Therefore, applications involving continuous fuel or lubricant contact may require NBR, HNBR, FKM, or another oil-resistant elastomer.
Keltan 6950C contains only about 44% ethylene, which reduces the chains from forming polyethylene-like regular zones compared to high-ethylene EPDMs. Therefore, the product can remain more flexible at low temperature. In automotive gasket and sponge profiles, this property can be important.
ENB units do not directly impart high unsaturation to the polymer main chain. The reactive double bond is located in the side chain. This molecular design helps to keep the main chain more resistant to oxidative and ozone-induced attack while providing the necessary unsaturation for vulcanization.
The 9% ENB level in Keltan 6950C promotes rapid cross-link development. As the ENB level increases, the number of active sites that can participate in the reaction in sulfur cure systems generally increases.
This structure can be particularly useful in continuous extrusion and vulcanization lines where high production speed is essential.
CLCB structure means that there are controlled long branching in the polymer chain. Long chain branching can increase melt elasticity compared to linear polymers.

High melt elasticity during extrusion can help the profile better maintain its shape after extruding.
However, overelastic melt behavior can also affect process phenomena such as die swell. Therefore, the mold design and extrusion conditions must be adjusted according to grade.
Keltan 6950C is included in the EPDM family, which naturally shows high resistance to ozone cracking due to its saturated main chain. Long-term durability can also be achieved in weather conditions, ultraviolet light, oxygen and hot water environments with the appropriate stabilizer and filling system.
The nonpolar structure of EPDM provides an advantage against water and many polar environments, but it may tend to swell with hydrocarbon fuel and mineral oils. For this reason, Keltan 6950C is not a direct alternative to elastomers with high oil resistance such as NBR or FKM in systems that are in constant contact with fuel hose or oil.

The high Mooney viscosity of Keltan 6950C can provide high crude strength in the compound, but may require higher mixing energy than low viscosity grades.
Ethylene levels of 44% limit its tendency to crystallize. Therefore, its low-temperature flexibility is advantageous in important applications.
An ENB level of 9% is an important parameter for fast sulfur vulcanization and high productivity.
These values are those of the raw Keltan 6950C polymer. The hardness, tensile strength, elongation at break, or compression set values of the final vulcanized compound vary by formulation and should not be confused with the raw polymer properties.

HOW DOES KELTAN 6950C WORK AT THE MOLECULAR LEVEL?

The elastomer behavior of Keltan 6950C is based on the reversible elongation and relaxation of long and mobile polymer chains in a cross-linked three-dimensional network.
In raw EPDM, the polymer chains are not permanently bonded to each other. In this case, the material can flow at high temperature or undergo permanent deformation.
During vulcanization, chemical cross-links are formed between chains over ENB-derived reactive sites.
In sulfur vulcanization, the sulfur and accelerator system react with the unsaturated regions of ENB, linking the polymer chains together. Cross-links prevent the chains from separating from each other completely. When the material is pulled, the chains orient, and when the force is removed, they tend to return to their thermodynamically more disordered state.
This mechanism creates the elastic return of the rubber.
Keltan 6950C is fast curable as the high ENB level provides more cross-link reaction points.
The low ethylene level, on the other hand, helps maintain molecular mobility by reducing the crystallization of chains at low temperature.
The CLCB structure affects entanglement and melt elasticity between long polymer branches. This, in turn, contributes to the mechanical behavior of the profile during extrusion.

The main functions of Keltan 6950C at the molecular and compound level are:

Elastomer main phase form

Providing crosslinkable EPDM matrix

Providing low-temperature flexibility

Supporting rapid sulfur vulcanization

Main areas of use:

Automotive foam profiles

Automotive door seals

Boot seals

Glass perimeter profiles

Air tightness profiles

Wiper blades

Extruded EPDM profiles

Foam EPDM profiles

Construction profiles

Rubber sheets

Seal systems

The application areas of the Keltan 6950C that are particularly highlighted by the manufacturer are automotive sponge applications, dense profiles and wiper blades.
The combination of low ethylene and high ENB in sponge profiles can provide advantages in terms of both low temperature flexibility and rapid vulcanization.
In dense profiles, the high Mooney and CLCB structure can contribute to the preservation of geometry after extrusion.
In wiper blades, elastic return, ozone resistance and outdoor performance are important.

AUTOMOTIVE FOAM, DENSE PROFILE AND GASKET APPLICATIONS OF KELTAN 6950C

Automotive profile systems are the most important area of use of Keltan 6950C.

The possible functions of the Keltan 6950C in profile applications are:

Creating a sponge profile matrix

Providing low-temperature elasticity

Supporting rapid vulcanization

Maintaining the extrusion shape

Resisting ozone cracking

Providing resistance to rain and moisture

Withstand repeated compression

Maintaining flexibility in temperature changes

Carbon black and filler to provide carrying capacity

Low-density sponge compound develop

Supporting the long-term mechanical performance of the door seal

Providing water/air tightness around doors and trunks

In automotive weatherstrip systems, rubber needs to be both soft and long-lasting. Keltan 6950C's low ethylene level can help reduce hardening, especially in cold climate.
In sponge EPDM profiles, the cell structure is developed depending on the blowing agent, curing system and extrusion-vulcanization conditions.
A high ENB level can help advance the cross-linking reaction in harmony with the bulking reaction.
If the cure is too slow, the gas cells may collapse or the profile may undergo deformation. Too fast curing may limit cell growth.
For this reason, the rapid vulcanization character of Keltan 6950C must be optimized in combination with the accelerator and blowing-agent system in the foam recipe.
There is no cell formation in dense profiles. Here, it is important that the profile maintains its uniform geometry after exiting the mold, surface quality and dimensional stability.
High Mooney viscosity and CLCB architecture can be advantageous in this type of extrusion.
Door and window profiles are subjected to compression cycles over the years, not just when they are first manufactured. The final compression set performance depends not only on the Keltan 6950C, but also on the cross-linking system and the total compound.

USE OF KELTAN 6950C IN WIPER, HOSE AND TECHNICAL RUBBER APPLICATIONS

Keltan 6950C is one of the EPDM grades specially approved by the manufacturer for wiper blades.
In the application of a squeegee, the material must maintain its elasticity during continuous repetitive movement on the glass.
If the rubber hardens at low temperature, the wiper will not be able to follow the glass curve, and the water cleaning performance may be reduced.
This is where Keltan 6950C's low ethylene level is useful in terms of low-temperature flexibility.
EPDM's natural resistance to ozone and weather conditions supports the long-term use of wipers outdoors.
Friction and surface properties depend on compound formulation, surface treatment and coating technology.
In hose applications, EPDM can be used especially on outer layers exposed to hot water, coolant and weather.
However, EPDM is not highly resistant to hydrocarbon oils and fuels. Hose inner layers that are in constant contact with mineral oil or fuel may require other elastomers depending on the application condition.
Keltan 6950C can also be used in technical gaskets and profiles. With the appropriate formulation, long service life under heat, ozone and humidity can be targeted.
In electrical and cable applications, the good electrical insulation character of EPDM can be evaluated. However, the compliance of the exact Keltan 6950C with the specific cable standard should be verified on a product and compound basis.

IS KELTAN 6950C USED IN FOOD, COSMETICS AND PHARMACEUTICAL APPLICATIONS?

Keltan 6950C is EPDM raw material mainly for the automotive and technical rubber sectors.
It is not a direct food additive, cosmetic raw material or pharmaceutical excipient.
The usability of Keltan 6950C in food contact gasket or hose systems cannot be determined solely by looking at the EPDM chemistry.
Food contact suitability should be evaluated based on the formulation of the entire compound, carbon black used, oil, vulcanizing agents, migration and target legislation.
The same approach applies to medical device and pharmaceutical elastomer applications.
Keltan 6950C should not be assumed to be medical or pharmaceutical grade without specific manufacturer's certification and final compound evaluation.
In cosmetic products, it is not used directly as a formulation raw material.
If an indirect use such as packaging or technical gasket is considered, the relevant final product standard should be examined separately.

WHAT PROBLEMS CAN KELTAN 6950C HELP SOLVE?

Keltan 6950C can help solve various technical problems, especially in EPDM compounds where fast curing, low temperature flexibility, extrusion stability and outdoor resistance are required.

Extreme hardening of EPDM profile at low temperature

In high-ethylene EPDM grades, crystallization can increase low-temperature hardness. Keltan 6950C's ethylene content of about 44% can reduce this tendency, supporting low-temperature flexibility.

Low vulcanization rate

Keltan 6950C's ENB content of approximately 9% provides a high number of reactive diene sites and may contribute to rapid sulfur vulcanization.

Collapse of sponge profile cells

If the curing reaction lags too far behind the bulking process, the cells may collapse before they stabilize. The fast curing character of Keltan 6950C can help to establish this balance with the appropriate blowing-agent system.

Dense profile loses its form after exiting the mold

Insufficient melt elasticity may cause sagging or deformation of the profile. High Mooney and CLCB structure can promote shape stability.

Automotive gasket forming ozone cracks

The saturated main chain of EPDM provides high natural resistance to ozone cracking. Keltan 6950C is therefore suitable for seals used outdoors.

Wiper blade loses performance in the cold

The low ethylene content contributes to keeping the rubber more flexible at low temperature and can support the wiper blade to follow the glass surface.

Insufficient mechanical body of the compound

High Mooney viscosity can increase the crude elastomer strength and mechanical body of filled compounds.

Surface and size instability in the extrusion profile

CLCB structure and proper compound viscosity can help improve profile extrusion behavior.

The compound is too difficult to process

In this case, increasing Keltan 6950C or using higher Mooney may not be the right solution. Oil level, blend with low Mooney EPDM or process aid may be required.

High compression set value

This problem does not depend only on grade selection. The cruciate link system, cure state, fat level and filling structure should be optimized together.

Not every compound problem can be solved by selecting Keltan 6950C alone. All recipe and process conditions must be evaluated together.

THINGS TO CONSIDER WHEN USING KELTAN 6950C

High Mooney viscosity, high ENB level and compound cure kinetics are the basic technical parameters in the use of Keltan 6950C.

The following issues should be considered when using Keltan 6950C:

Exact grade should be verified.

Keltan 6950C should not be confused with 6950 Regional.

Keltan 6950C and Eco grades should be separated.

Mooney viscosity should be checked.

The ethylene content should be evaluated.

The ENB level should be checked.

CLCB construction should be considered.

The carbon black type should be selected.

The level of filling should be optimized.

The paraffinic oil level must be adjusted.

The mixing energy should be controlled.

The mixing temperature should be followed.

Premature scorch should be prevented.

The accelerator system should be optimized.

The sulfur level should be adjusted.

If peroxide is used, the coagent system should be evaluated.

Blowing agent/curing balance should be established in sponge formulation.

The extrusion temperature must be optimized.

The die swell should be checked.

The vulcanization temperature should be monitored.

T90 should be followed.

The final hardness must be measured.

Compression set should be checked.

Low-temperature performance should be tested.

Ozone resistance should be evaluated.

TDS should be examined.

SDS should be examined.

The COA should be checked.

Keltan 6950C can react quickly due to high ENB. Therefore, the overpowered accelerator system can reduce scorch safety.
High Mooney viscosity may create higher mixing energy requirements than low viscosity EPDM grades. Mixer fill factor and rotor conditions should be regulated accordingly.
When oil extension is required, paraffinic process oils compatible with EPDM are preferred. Aromatic oils may have lower compatibility with EPDM structure.

ALTERNATIVES AND COMPARISON OF KELTAN 6950C

When determining the Keltan 6950C alternative, only the name "EPDM" or Mooney viscosity should not be compared. Ethylene, ENB, molecular weight distribution, oil content and long chain branching should be evaluated together.

KELTAN 6950C AND KELTAN 6950 REGIONAL

Both products are in the high Mooney/high ENB EPDM grade with a viscosity of approximately 65 MU Mooney and an ENB level of 9%.
The main difference can be seen in the ethylene content.
Keltan 6950C contains about 44% ethylene, while Keltan 6950 Regional contains about 48% ethylene.
The lower ethylene content contributes to Keltan 6950C's ability to provide an advantage in terms of low-temperature flexibility.
Before one-to-one substitution, low temperature, extrusion and compound mechanical properties should be compared.

KELTAN 6950C AND KELTAN 6951C

Keltan 6951C has a chemical profile very close to Keltan 6950C, with an ethylene content of approximately 44% and an ENB content of 9%.
The Mooney viscosity of Keltan 6951C is about 63 MU.
One of the most significant differences is that Keltan 6951C contains about 15 phr of oil.
Therefore, the two products should not be directly replaced by weight. The total balance of polymer and oil in the compound should be recalculated.

KELTAN 6950C AND KELTAN 7752C

Keltan 7752C has a content of approximately 45% ethylene and 7.5% ENB.
Mooney viscosity is about 53 MU and elongated with about 20 phr oil.
Keltan 6950C has a higher ENB and a higher polymer Mooney value.
Therefore, the 6950C can provide faster curing and higher compound body, while the 7752C may be easier to machine.
One-to-one substitution should not be made.

KELTAN 6950C AND KELTAN 8550C

Keltan 8550C is a higher viscosity EPDM grade with a viscosity of about 48% ethylene and about 80 MU Mooney.
Keltan 6950C is at the lower Mooney level with about 65 MU.
8550C can provide high mechanical performance and filler handling capability due to its higher molecular weight, but processing can be more challenging.
The 6950C, on the other hand, can offer fast curing and more stable extrusion behavior with high ENB.
Comparison should be made on the exact ENB and application requirement.

KELTAN 6950C AND OTHER ENB-EPDM GRADES

ENB-based EPDM grades from other manufacturers can be a technical alternative with similar ethylene, ENB and Mooney values.
However, the molecular weight distribution and long chain branching may not be the same.
Even two EPDMs with the same 44% ethylene and 65 Mooney values can behave differently in terms of extrusion, die swell, and filler incorporation.
For this reason, compound-based comparative trials should be carried out in the evaluation of alternative raw materials.
