Uses
Sorbitan monooleate (E494) is a low HLB surfactant suggested for use as a w/o emulsifier or as an o/w emulsifier for use in cosmetic formulations, oil field chemicals, plastics, household products, coatings and textiles.
Sorbitan monooleate (E494) is a low HLB nonionic emulsifier, often used in combination with tween 80.
Sorbitan monooleate (E494) is mainly used in the following aspects:
(1) As a food additive.
Sorbitan monooleate (E494) can be added to desserts, bread, ice cream and beverages to enhance the taste of food, improve stability and extend shelf life.
(2) As a cosmetic emulsifier, thickener and surfactant, it is commonly found in sunscreen, face cream, essence, lotion and other products.
(3) As a pharmaceutical adjuvant.
Sorbitan monooleate (E494) can be used for the encapsulation and storage of pharmaceutical active ingredients (such as phenols, vitamins and other various antioxidant-rich molecules), and can also be used as an emulsifier, thickener and stabilizer in compound preparations.
(4) Fiber lubricant and softener in the textile industry.

In the food sector, Sorbitan monooleate (E494) is often used as a stabiliser, emulsifier and preservative.
Sorbitan monooleate (E494) can be used to make dairy products, lactic acid drinks, salad dressings, condiments and breads.
Sorbitan monooleate (E494) has good emulsifying properties, which can make the food more homogeneous and stable, and enhance the aesthetics and edible taste of the product.
Sorbitan monooleate (E494) also inhibits the growth of microorganisms and extends the shelf life of food products.
In the pharmaceutical field, Sorbitan monooleate (E494) is widely used to make oral drugs and topical drugs.
Sorbitan monooleate (E494) can help the drug to disperse in water and speed up the absorption of the drug effect, and it can also reduce the irritation and side effects of the drug.
In cosmetics, Sorbitan monooleate (E494) is a common surfactant used in skin care products such as shampoos, body washes and moisturisers.
Sorbitan monooleate (E494) makes products easier to rinse off and also improves consistency and emulsification properties, making them easier to push out.
